If your score is:

1 – 5 You try to eat healthfully but sometimes slip up. Work on the points to which you answered YES to avoid brain fog.

6 – 9 You don’t think much about what you eat. At times, you feel anxious or depressed. Start to attend to the quality of your diet.

10 – 13 You have many cravings and have trouble remembering things. You sometimes get panic attacks and/or depression. Choose a healthier, natural diet to boost brain and body health.

Even for those taking medications, enlisting holistic nutrition can bring profound, positive changes to your mental health. Our society tends to ignore the role of nutrition as a way to impact our thoughts or feelings.

Food Allergies can not only be a source of skin rash or wheezing, but also can cause adverse mental symptoms. According to Dr. B. Zylberberg, M.D., of Toronto, specializing in food allergies, mold and ragweed are two environmental allergens that are associated with food problems. For some, anything that has been fermented or uses the yeast process such as wines, beer, vinegar, soy sauce and breads with yeast can be highly allergenic. Also, some people react to nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers). You may react to other foods. To be certain, food allergy testing is a good option.

After one week of avoidance of offending foods, you may start feeling better. However, it can take approximately three months for a brain to recover from chronic deficiency – so don’t give up.

Healthy Eating Schedule for Mental Health

Protein is made up of fragments known as amino acids. Some amino acids have a direct affect on levels of certain brain chemicals. Eating foods naturally high in tryptophan (fish, chicken, meat, eggs, dairy food, legumes, beans, tofu, walnuts and avocado) can improve mood as the tryptophan is converted by the body to serotonin (the happy neurotransmitter). Have small amounts at each meal. Serotonin elevates moods, self-esteem, feelings of optimism and induces calm feelings and sleep.

Carbohydrates help absorption of tryptophan into the brain. Slow releasing carbohydrates such as oatmeal and natural sugars in fruits and vegetables can help the absorption of tryptophan across the blood brain barrier. Eat these with protein. Refined sugar creates cravings and dependency.

Fats are important to the brain since it is made up of over 60% fat. Avoiding all fat can lead to anxiety, depression and other mental health problems. Healthy fats are also foods that reduce cholesterol. Polyunsaturated “Omega 3″ fats are particularly important and can be found in salmon and sardines along with pumpkin seeds, ground flax seeds or their oil and walnuts. Omega 6 fats are found in nuts and seeds and other cold pressed, healthy oils. Only small amounts are necessary.

Vitamins and Minerals are co-factors, nutrients that help the conversion of the tryptophan protein fragments into the good mood brain chemical serotonin. Nutrients such as Vitamin C, Folic Acid, Vitamin B6, Biotin, Zinc and Selenium are found in fruits, avocados, vegetables such as lettuce, other leafy greens, and fish, oats, sardines, walnuts or other nuts. These vitamins and minerals as co-factors can also be taken as supplements, but a good diet throughout the day is the base.

Highlights of Valencia, Spain’s Culture Capital

Perhaps as a Valencia shuttle driver I may be biased, but I think the city is a real gem that is too often overlooked in favour of the other major cities in Spain. Madrid may be the Spanish capital and Barcelona popular for its arts scene and vibrant atmosphere, but for culture and architectural splendour, Valencia is the place to be. Whenever I drive someone from Valencia airport to a city hotel, and always enjoy telling them what a treat they’ve let themselves in for.

There’s plenty to experience on a holiday to Valencia, but there are few highlights that are simply unmissable – here are some of my personal recommendations…

Stroll Through the Old Town

The architectural mix in the Old Town is quite astonishing, ranging from Baroque cathedrals to the Gothic grandeur of the Silk Exchange, the breathtaking building where the silk merchants of old used to ply their trade. The Old Town reflects the many cultural influences that have made Valencia what it is today – Roman, Muslim and Chrisitans have all ruled the city at one time or another.

I always say to my Valencia shuttle passengers, you can spend days wandering through the streets of the Old Town and still not see everything, but don’t miss out on the Santa Catalina Bell Tower, the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados, and the Plaza de Reina. The Plaza is also the best place to pick up a horse drawn carriage to take you around the Old Town, which is certainly an experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

Marvel at the City of Arts and Sciences

When they drained the Turia river after a severe flood, they had two choices; turn it into a park or a highway. The highway would have made driving from Valencia airport to the city easier for me, but I can’t fault their choice, especially since the recent addition of The City of Arts and Sciences. This jaw dropping modern science park truly has something for everyone – an outstanding science museum, IMAX cinema, aquarium, dolphinarium, and underwater restaurant are amongst the many facilities on offer.

Shop at the Central Market

With over a thousand bustling food stalls to explore, the Central Market is the best place to sample local delicacies. Housed in a handsome modern building and decorated with colourful ceramic tiles, the stalls have plenty to offer to foodies on a holiday in Valencia, including fresh fruit, regional cheeses and wines, and the local speciality – paella.

See the Holy Grail at Valencia Cathedral

OK, no one can say for sure whether Valencia’s claim to be the resting place of the mythical Holy Grail is based on sound historical research, optimistic wishing, or a canny marketing play by the city’s tourist board. But in any case, the Valencia Cathedral is an unmissable highlight of the city. The mix of Roman, Gothic and Baroque architecture is fascinating, and (however authentic it may be) the golden chalice that hangs above the altar certainly looks the part – my Valencia shuttle passengers invariably rave about how exciting it was to see!

Bar Promotions – 4 Bar Promotion Ideas to Get People in Your Bar and Keep ‘Em Coming Back

Bar Promotions are essential for most bars to stay open these days. And coming up with new bar promotion ideas is not always easy.

Although a tough economy may not affect the bar industry as much as other industries, it can still get tough to bring the people in. Bars, clubs and pubs all have to fight to keep people coming back night after night.

Before getting into some ideas for different bar promotions, lets examine the main reasons for holding these events in the first place (aside from the obvious ‘making more money’)…

  • Increase Customer Traffic – Bring in new customers and keep current customers coming back.
  • Get Customers to Come in Earlier and Stay Later – Fill those empty afternoon or early evening hours. By entertaining customers with different bar promotions and bar contests, people will stay longer and spend more.
  • Create Buzz – By putting on cool new bar events, people will talk, resulting in more customers on non-event nights.
  • Match or Beat out the Competition – Stay ahead of your competitors by doing something a little more fun / wild / crazy / cool than they’re doing.
  • Reward Regulars – Bar promotions give the bar a chance to give back to their regular customers.
  • Celebrate Milestones – Whether its new menu items, a new signature cocktail, the owner’s birthday, a remodelling or a 1 year anniversary, there are always good reasons to throw a party.
  • Creates a Lively Atmosphere – Without regular bar promotions, it’s not only your customers that are getting bored, it’s your staff as well.

Bar Promotion Ideas to Get People in your Bar

  1. Guest Bartenders
  2. You can either find local celebrities (radio DJ, weather girl, model etc) or you can pick a guest bartender from your list of friends / associates or one of the regular customers. You may want to have a pre-night quick bartender training (or at least orientation) before they go live. Guest Bartenders will bring in their friends to come and see them. And if you use a local celebrity, you should be able to get some press coverage with it. Careful to watch your guest bartenders – they may not know what’s ok to do and what’s not.

  3. Dog-Friendly Bar
  4. Many bars don’t allow dogs into their establishments. If you’re open during the day and especially if you have a patio, allowing dogs into your establishment can bring in a whole new crowd of people. Why not kick it off with a Dog Lovers gathering and use Facebook Ads to traffic people in your area with dogs?

  5. Wines of the World Promotion
  6. If your establishment serves a fair amount of wine, you may want to try a Wines of the World promotion. Make a punch card that the customer can take with them (with your bar contact details on the back) and punch it each time they try a wine from your Wines of the World promo. You could offer 10 wines from 10 different countries, crossing as many grape varieties as possible – chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon etc… This bar promotion could be run by the bottle or glass depending on how many wine drinkers frequent your bar. If they punch their way through 10 glasses or bottles, give them some bar or wine merchandise – a pair of wine glasses, a wine opener, a bottle opener etc.

  7. Video Game Tournament
  8. Play them or not, video games have a huge following. Find out what the popular video game of choice is amongst your patrons and put on a tournament. This works especially well if you can put the game on a projector screen so that everyone in the bar can see. Have people sign-up before hand and make sure you check all the equipment before the big night / weekend. You can charge people an entry fee and give away cash prizes and / or bar merchandise.

These are just a few of the ways that you can bring people into your establishment. When trying to think of new bar promotions for you bar, ask and look around. Ask your guests for their opinions or what they’ve seen. Talk to your own staff and see what kind of ideas they have. And lastly, look around your city to find out what other people are doing – and then do it better.

The Connection Between Wine and Spirituality

Note to the reader. The following article, looks into the way that the fruit of the vine and the art and wine making have been likened to the spiritual journey of the soul which is why many of us use wine in religious ceremonies. The article also attempts to give insight into how humankind, who seemed, on the face of things, to be created as just another animal species existing within the natural world, separated itself from the exposure that exists within nature and adopted a new way of fending for itself. This ‘way’ was first and foremost the power of reason or brainpower. The development of mankind and the ultimate goal, similarly to the making of a great wine, cannot be clearly envisaged or judged from within the process without the development of special tools but if mankind is to survive as a species we must develop upon a course that will lead us back to the point where we once again fully conform with the law of nature which is also the law of God. When we attain this point we will have gained our right to exist in the presence of God.

The connection between wine, or the fruit of the vine and spirituality is abundantly apparent in both the Jewish and Christian religious traditions. Wine is used during the blessing and sanctification of religious occasions in the Jewish tradition and it is central to the Cristian tradition (particularly in Catholicism) in so much as it is used in the Mass. Christians either believe that the wine becomes the blood of Jesus Christ or believe that it represents his blood. This depends upon the denomination to which one belongs

So, what is it about ” fruit of the vine” that gets holy men so worked up?. It is not by chance that the Jewish fathers who adopted the belief in a single and omnipotent Creator chose the grape to represent the path that every soul must journey upon to reach it’s ultimate goal. Indeed, every aspect of the grape and the making of wine has relevant symbolic meaning to the spiritual path of the soul.

In order to be able to fully understand what I going to talk about we must first look at the evolution of mankind and the evolution of the human ego over time and compare it with the making of wine. Like mankind the grape was created to exist within nature. When the human species first started to emerge as a creature that was developing traits which set it apart from all other creatures in that it possessed a brain larger and therefore more capable of adapting to circumstances than most other animal species. Early humans started to diverge onto a path that would lead them to believe that they were created to fulfill an entirely different purpose to that of all other species. They began to believe that everything in nature was created only for their sole benefit. The purpose of the formation of such a belief was a strategy directed toward ensuring the continued survival of the human species.

Over the course of time animal herds would dwindle in number due to the great ice age and mankind would realize that the reality in which he once thrived had changed forever. This former bountiful state is represented in the bible as being same period which we call the garden of Eden. As a consequence of this changed state of affairs man would reverse his belief in the the ability of nature to provide all his needs and would set himself upon a course whereby he took sole responsibility for his own development and survival. In his mind he was now separate and in control of his own destiny and the course of nature. However, it is important to point out that this new mind set only exists in the perception of mankind because in reality we are still very much connected to nature. We refer to this period as the advent of the agricultural age.

The point at which man determined that he was above nature (due to the fact that he no longer trusted the power of nature as being capable of supplying his needs) can be interpreted as the point at which the human ego started to develop within. Until then fear only existed to warn animals of impending danger and man as a creature existing within nature acted in accordance with the same principles. Ego being desire or need which is founded upon fear. This ego quality that was hitherto foreign to the nature of man can be compared to the yeast which grows on the outer skin of the grape but is just as foreign to the grape’s initial and integral design as the ego is to man’s original state. In saying that, yeast is critical to the survival of the grape due to the resistance that the yeast provides against the invasion of other micro organisms which would very much like thrive on the sugar within the grape. Likewise, the ego is just as essential to the spiritual development of mankind. You might now be asking the question,”but how does this compare with the Ego of man?”

The answer to this is as follows: the ego of man developed as a strategy that enabled him to disconnect himself from the events occurring within the forces of nature to a degree that gave him the ability to manipulate them to his own advantage but to the extent of his powers of the perception of reality.

At this point I would like to point out that the spiritual tradition of the nation of Israel, (or Kabbalah) which was founded by Abraham in Babylon where he wrote his “Book Of Life”, considers Nature to be the the absolute total sum of reality, material and spiritual. Therefore, according to the spiritual tradition of Judaism, God and Nature are one and the same.

As many of us know, the ground, humidity, altitude and climate in which the vine is grown are all factors contributing to the suitabilty of the grape used for wine making. Conditions in which wine making grapes are grown must be close to the limit that the grape can tolerate if the wine is to be of superior quality. Wine makers call these environmental conditions “terrois” This way the sugars, acids and tannins that develop within the grape develop as a consequence of the forces acting upon the vine. These conditions ensure the vine’s survival within the reality in which it grows. This also provides the solid ingredient base upon which the wine maker performs his art.

In actual fact, what is happening is that the difficulties that the grape experiences push the grape (by the provision of resistance) into developing those qualities within itself that will later form the material that will a) give the grape a better chance of surviving the condition in which it develops and b) provide the material needed for the making of a superior wine. Likewise, if conditions were to be perfect for man his development would cease and he would revert back to a situation parallel to his former situation whereby all of his needs were determined by and provided for by nature. The difficulties which the creator presents us with can be likened to darkness, the sole purpose of which is to push us toward the light. Yet as with the grape, the creator can will never present us with conditions which we are unable to tolerate. (This relates to “us” as a species).

The next stage requires intervention. On behalf of the grape the one who intervenes is the wine maker and on behalf of mankind God himself intervenes at the request of man.

At the stage of the “so called” break from nature it is as though mankind based his whole ethos upon this so called foreign element. It is as though he transferred it from without to within so as to make the ego an integral part of every aspect of his being in the same way that in order to make wine the yeast that coats the skin grape must enter the flesh of the grape and mix with the juice through the intervention of the wine maker.

In man it is as if the essential quantity of the fear element that is essential to all animal species, which is known as the “fight or flight response”, (the function of which is to ensure the continued survival of the species), was not enough. Man developed an additional fear. He needed and actively sought more advantages to enable him to survive. The point at which this new fear burst forth was when man convinced himself the his destiny should be placed solely in his own hands and be shaped by his own vision.

In the realization of the limitations of the human brain and in it’s capacity to operate solely upon the powers of reason, some men saw that by the use of the power of his brain the only course upon which he set himself was one of self destruction. The quality of desiring the advantage for the self first always stands in the way of man’s ultimate goal which is the creation of complete harmony and happiness.

It was Abraham who first saw that what was needed in order to achieve happiness and harmony was simply Integrity. That is to say the development of the principle of loving thy neighbor as thyself. or, in other words to love thy neighbour as if he were thyself. (This notion is developed from the realization that reality only exist within the function of our senses and hence, reality is therfore an integral part of what and who we are) The implication of this is that mankind can only reach the result that he seeks by first investing in others that which through his own nature he would have for himself. This way, all others are catered for and through their similar investment our rewards become far greater because we receive our investment back from infinite avenues. The only thing stopping us from achieving this high state of attainment is fear itself, the fear of being without, left out and excluded. We believe ourselves to be justified in this perception because we imagine that all others lack our own level of morality would cheat us.

So how can we move from our present state into one of attainment. There is only one way to do this. One must become desolate in the belief that through ones own devices we can reach the one true goal. Just as the grape, which without the intervention of the wine maker it would fall from the vine to take seed in the soil only to begin the whole process anew. Man must shed himself of everything that he formally held dear, to clean himself of all the self made pollutants and to seek signals of a different reality. ( We call this phenomena peripheral or indirect light because we cannot use it ourselves but only desire that through its impression upon us and hence through the creation of true desire, direct light will start to appear and act upon us). This peripheral light causes us to realize the folly of our former way of life and this is the first stage of the spiritual path.

As the grape starts to ferment it seems at first as though nothing will happen. All we see is confusion. And so it is on the spiritual path. Only through sensing peripheral light or the knowledge that the goal is worth having and by the knowledge that we gain, do we receive a vision that it will lead to our salvation in the same way that the wine maker has a vision of his end product do we gain the strength to remain upon the path.

At certain stages in the process of making wine the wine maker must clean scum that collects upon the surface of the wine. He must do this before the unwanted scum sinks to the bottom and spoils the wine. Likewise, along the spiritual path when we become aware of qualities which interfere in our quest to reach our goal we reduce these qualities to such an extent that they become negligible.

The fermentation represents the interaction between the ego qualities of man, and our false perception of reality. This happens in many stages along the path to spiritual attainment. Each time it may appear that we start the process anew. Sometimes it appears that we sink to levels that we never experienced the like of before. In spite of this we pick ourselves up and carry on. (This clearer insight into our state occurs because the self created bias that formally clouded the vision of ourselves begins to deminish and reveals a ever increasingly clearer vision as we progress). God, like the wine maker presents us with the work which we need to perform in order to reach the the goal in the same way that the wine maker knows what he has to do at every stage of making perfect wine and only by having the vision of the stage to which we are drawn can we likewise hope to liken ourselves to that state of perfection which is god himself.

Now we see how that the grape and the conditions in which it develops and the wine making process help to give us a clear picture of the course that our soul must make in order to reach it’s goal which is to sit at the right hand of God. (This is done by adopting his characteristics through the correction of our emotional state) It is for this reason that the symbolism represented within the process which the of the fruit of the wine undergoes is so sacred to Jewish and christian religions because it helps us to remember the path upon which every soul must embark in order to reach it’s ultimate destination which is also the only purpose of our existence upon this earth.

How to Marinate Steak

Instead of tossing a steak on the grill naked, try some marinade recipes to raise the flavor of the meat and awaken your taste buds. Marinating tougher cuts of meat such as flank and skirt steaks really takes the toughness out of the meat and doesn’t require a pricey cut of meat.

The first step to marinating a steak is to find a recipe that is appealing to everyone. One staple of marinade should always be an acidic fruit such as lemon or lime. These juices help break down the muscle fibers and make the meat more tender. Vinegar and an acidic wine are other good options to break down the meat. Be careful to keep the pH above 5 or the acids will pull the moisture out of the meat making it tougher.

When adding ingredients to the marinade for flavor, consider some fruit juices. Pineapple, kiwi and papaya juices also help soften the meat while adding a sweet flavor.

Common marinades contain onion, garlic, shallots, brown sugar, dried herbs, Worcestershire sauce and vegetable oil. The oil brings the ingredients together and begins the combination. Other marinades include beer, peanut oil, horseradish and honey. This mixture would give the tongue a spicy and sweet treat. Sometimes individuals do not want their meat marinated because they want to taste the meat naturally. A covering of salt and pepper would enhance the meat’s natural flavor and make the outside a bit crispy.

The length of time needed to marinate properly depends on the cut of meat. Ribeye filets are tender and juicy when marinated overnight while prime rib will not need any tenderizing. When the marinade is prepared, put it in a large zippered storage bag and add the meat or if it’s a large quantity, use a baking dish covered in plastic wrap. Remember to flip the meat often so both sides get equal marinade. The meat will get the most marinade if the surface area of the meat is covered. One suggestion is to use a vacuum seal bag that will remove the air and immerse the meat in the marinade completely. This method cuts the marinating time down by 75%.

After marinating, the cook would not want to lose flavor or tenderness while cooking. Be sure to use tongs to flip the meat on the grill. Using a fork would pierce the meat and make it dry inside. The goal is to keep the meat as moist as possible for maximum taste. After the steak is cooked to standards, be sure to let the meat rest. This will ensure the flavorful juices stay within the meat instead of all over the plate when cut into. Every bite will have maximum flavor instead of just the first.

If the leftover marinade is to be converted into a sauce, it must be boiled before serving. If it is not, cross contamination from the contact with raw meat is very likely. Also, always place marinating meat in the refrigerator to ensure safety. If the meat is left at room temperature, it could grow bacteria and make people ill.

Steak Marinating Tips

  • Ensure the ingredients in the marinade will taste good when combined
  • Remember to use an acid in the marinade to help tenderize the meat
  • Do not use the leftover marinade as a sauce without cooking first
  • Let the steak sit for at least 10 minutes after cooking is complete. This will ensure the juices are redistributed and every bite will be as juicy as the first.

Buffets and Barbeques – The Pleasures and Perils

Summer is finally here. For us winter-weary, heat-deprived northerners, summer is a welcome break and cause for celebration. Out comes the back-yard barbeque with the appropriate summer drinks.

With summer’s delicious bounty and one social event after another, it can certainly be a challenging time to keep one’s figure in check. Everything tastes so good in the outdoors.

Clients often tell me that their love of food, their appetites or their culinary abilities put them at a disadvantage when it comes to being fit and trim. Hmmm. Let’s look at that.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like to eat. What about you? Do you love the tastes, aromas and textures of food or do you love the feeling of getting full? Do you really love food? I’m talking about the verb love, not the feeling of love.

If you truly ‘love’ food are you treating it as such? Are you respectful, caring and attentive to food? Or do you prefer to stuff it down as quickly as possible to get that full feeling? What about focusing, instead, on taking slow, conscious pleasure in the experience? Stuffing yourself with food is more abusive than loving, don’t you think? Admiring what you are about to eat is a great way to begin a meal. Think about how you feel about eating it. How do you think it will taste? Have you given thanks?

When you finally start in, be mindful of the tastes and textures. If you love the food, you will want to make it last as long as possible by chewing thoroughly and pausing between bites. If you are really paying attention you will notice the tastes become less profound or less delicious as you become more satisfied or full. I think you will find that if you eat food that you love for only as long as you love it, you will be inclined to eat less because you are truly satisfied.

On the other hand, if you’re eating without paying attention because you’re multi-tasking or you’ve just checked out, you will probably eat more than what feels good and you will miss the entire experience. Been there?

If you really love food, be discriminating. There’s no room for mediocrity. If you’re cooking, don’t fix no junk! If you’re lined up at the buffet, choose wisely. In addition to a sore tummy, helping yourself to some of everything means you don’t really taste anything specifically, kind of like casserole. If you help yourself to something that doesn’t live up to your expectations, you can always put it aside. Your mother’s not looking. It’s more wasteful to eat it than not.

If you know that having something in your mouth or in your belly (feeling full) is what you enjoy most, choose to chew on something that won’t do damage, like raw vegetables. It might be helpful to focus on the feeling of being satisfied, versus full, and work on getting used to feeling less full.

Sangria, Margarita, Stella Artois, whomever you like to mix it up with, beware. These girls are going to cost you. I hate to be the party pooper, but there are things you need to know before you imbibe. Alcohol slows your body’s ability to burn fat. It also raises your blood sugar insulin levels and increases appetite. Alcohol is essentially sugar, but it is closer to fat in terms of calorie density. Fat gained from alcohol goes directly to the abdomen, hence the term “beer belly.” Another thing. The more you drink, the less attentive you are likely to be, to what and how much you’re eating.

While red wine is getting lots of attention as a great source of antioxidants, and that’s good for the heart, remember that 5 ounces (just over 1/2 cup) daily for women and 5 – 10 ounces for men is all that’s required. Grapes and many other fruits and vegetables, as well as regular physical activity, offer the same benefits. Sadly, there is no need to drink red wine for the health benefits.

And now the good news. It’s summer; remember? Ditch the fuzzy slippers in exchange for something a little more athletic and the food and drink are not only more affordable, but taste even better to a deserving, active body.

Summer is the easiest time to be active because most of us just want to be outdoors, doing something. The possibilities are both simple and plentiful. Just get out there and move your body.

Armed with self-awareness and perspective, you get to choose what you will do with what you know. Trust yourself to make balanced, conscious choices.

“Tennis anyone?”

Where are the Most Romantic Destinations?

Is it time for a romantic getaway? If you had to think a moment, chances are it is. The truth is, anytime’s the right time for a romantic getaway. The hard part is coming up with the best destination to let the sparks fly. Here, then, are some of the best romantic destinations in the world.

Paris

Paris is known as the “Romance Capital of the World,” and for good reason. For lovers there are so many romantic places to visit: The quays of the Seine, its leafy squares and elegant parks, the many small and romantic restaurants. Or better still, you could book a cruise on the River Seine.

Barbados

Barbados is an eastern Caribbean island sometimes referred to as the “lover’s paradise.” If walking with your loved one along miles of unbroken sandy beaches appeals to you, then Barbados is your romantic destination. While there try one of the local sunset cruises on a yacht or tall ship.

Gretna Green

Never heard of Gretna Green? You should. It’s often referred to as the “Wedding Capital of the World.” Gretna Green is a small, historic village on the west coast in the south of Scotland, on the Scottish/English border, where everything, it seems, is geared to romance. While there you might want to stay at Comlongon Castle, which is located 15 minutes from Gretna, and also serves as a very popular castle wedding venue. A restored 14th Century Medieval Scottish castle, Comlongon offers 14 individually themed 4-poster bedrooms perfect for romance.

Poconos

The Poconos in Pennsylvania is another destination which has been called the “Romance Capital of the World,” popular as a destination for couples getting married or on their honeymoon. If you want the ultimate in romance, check out the Roman Tower Suite at Pocono Palace, which is designed with a Grand Roman theme. Of course, what’s grand to some is gaudy to others, but the Roman Tower Suite comes with floor-to-ceiling columns, vaulted ceilings, and a 7-foot tall Champagne Glass Whirlpool Bath built for two.

Niagara Falls

What the world needs is another “Romance Capital of the World.” That’s why there’s Niagara Falls, located on the Niagara River on the border between New York and Ontario. It’s not the tallest waterfall in the world, but it’s certainly the most famous – for its beauty, its power, and its weddings. Niagara Falls is actually a collection of three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls (called by some the Canadian Falls), the American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.

Virginia

Yes, Virginia, Virginia is for Lovers, as the tourism and travel slogan goes. And, romantic it is. With over 5,000 miles of shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, how can you possibly not find romance in Virginia? And, for those wine lovers among you, Virginia is also home to over 60 wineries. While there you might want to stay at one of Virginia’s most romantic B&B’s, Cedars of Williamsburg Bed & Breakfast, located just a 7-minute-walk to Colonial Williamsburg.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is so romantic, they had to write a song about it. The “Island of Romance,” located approximately 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles, has been host to romantics and newly-wedded couples for decades. Try timing your visit with a special event held at the Casino Ballroom, one of the most wonderful art deco treasures in Southern California. If you have an opportunity to dance at the Casino, you have to take it.

Tips to Consider When Planning Your Romantic Getaway

Consider booking the honeymoon suite, if your hotel has one. Honeymoon suites are not just for just-married couples. For a bit more money, you may be able to get a Jacuzzi in the suite, rose petals scattered around or even a heart-shaped bed.

Consider room service. Your romantic getaway can be even more romantic when you include a candlelight dinner in the hotel room itself.

Consider what’s around your hotel or lodging. Think about a romantic walk to a nearby park, or an excursion to a beautiful museum, or a romantic dinner out. There are many things that you can do to increase the romance. Find out what there is to do around the hotel that will be romantic. Remember, planning a romantic getaway is more than just picking a romantic location.
